Pool Questionnaire Results 2 Feb. 79
Questionnaires are still coming in from residents who happen to be away.

		Over-all reaction
93	In favor of having a pool and associated jacuzzi
22	On the fence or mildly opposed
87	Strongly opposed

Interest in using the pool or jacuzzi
43	Would use both
13 Would use the pool only
16	Would use the jacuzzi only
These totals include some people who opposed having the facilities but
indicated that they might use them if built. Not included, are others who
failed to check these questions but indicated their willingness to make a
monthly payment to help make the facilities available for others.

		Willingness to pay
60	$10 per month or more
21	$15 per month or more
14	$20 per month or more
4	Think pool should be free to all residents
3	Would contribute to an endowment to make pool available to all

		Anticipated usage
18	All year even if in the open
32	All year if in a building or bubble
16	Only during the summer
It was not always clear if those who preferred a building would only use
the facilities if in a building, or if they were just expressing a
preference. Also, several people failed to answer this question, but did
indicate a willingness to pay a monthly fee.

		Preferred location
26	Near croquet court
34	Near end of Colonnade
The location replies were very difficult to interpret. Many people failed
to answer while others suggested a variety of other locations. In general
it seemed that people tended to express their objections to specific sites
rather than to indicate their preference.
		End-of-colonnade question
Unfortunately some 60 people answered the question that was directed to
those whose apartments adjoin the Colonnade site, so we do not have a valid
answer for this question. Some of these nearby residents are understood to
be opposed to the use of this site, while a few others have specifically
indicated that they favor it.

		Open vs. enclosed
15	Open
19	In a building
20	Bubble covered

The members of the committee are divided in their interpretation of these
results. No information is available as to the relative importance
attached to having a building by those who expressed this preference nor do
we know if they would still like to have a pool even if it were in the open.

		Pool size, depth and usage
The general feeling is that a pool should be relatively small and not very
deep, and that children (yes, even grand- children) should not be allowed
to use the pool or perhaps should be restricted to using it between 12 and
1 o'clock (as is done at Rossmore) and then only if two residents are there.
Some even believe that guests should never be allowed to use the pool.

		General remarks
Obviously, a substantial number of residents would like to have a pool and
associated jacuzzi, more than the number that currently use many other
facilities. The question is not, what percent of our residents want to
have a pool? but rather, can those who want a pool have it without
adversely affecting the interests of the non-users.

The committee is currently looking into the reasons that cause some people
to be for and some to be against having a pool and we would welcome any
information that will help to clarify the issues. We are getting cost
figures for pools that are currently being built or are in use in this
area. We are also looking into the experience of places similar to The
Sequoias that do have pools.

The returned questionnaires are being held by the committee chairman for
inspection by those who would care to see them. Arthur Samuel (phone 233).
